DETROIT - Rosa Parks, whose refusal to give up her bus seat to a white man sparked the modern civil rights movement, died Monday evening. She was 92.

Mrs. Parks died at her home during the evening of natural causes, with close friends by her side, said Gregory Reed, an attorney who represented her for the past 15 years.

Mrs. Parks was 42 when she committed an act of defiance in 1955 that was to change the course of American history and earn her the title ?mother of the civil rights movement.?

By purest coincidance, PBS had a show about that and the resulting bus boycott on yesterday, or tonight.
It takes an especially brave soul to make a stand against a stupid law.

May she always have a seat, wherever her soul takes her.

Sometimes leadership comes not from wanting to be in front of a crowd, but just happening to be standing right where the crowd is about to turn. Rosa Parks is remembered most by those who knew her for her humility, and a generous as well as courageous heart. It seems to me that she had the courage and character to do something both simple and difficult to do these days...to simply state that something that is wrong is indeed wrong, and refusing to go along with it. We should be gratefull that she lived to be recognized for he actions, and how it began a chain of events that finally ended segregation within her lifetime.
